How can I find out if someon is married

How can I find out if someon is married? My boyfriend and I have been together for four years now and we live together. We got engaged this past Valentine's day but have not set a date yet. He is older than me and has no children, at least that is what he told me.
For some reason I think he is not telling me the whole truth about his past. He is very secretive about certain things and always ends the conversation in a hurry when I go into his past too much. We are talking about marriage but he keeps saying that he wants to "make sure everything is straight first." What does that even mean?
I think he has a past family, including wife and/or kids that he doesn't want me to find out about. He may even still be legally connected to this woman. Why else will he not set a date, even for 2 years away from now?
